Then and Now

I like to take pictures of Daya in the same spots as she grows up.
For the most part, she humors me and lets me do it.
I especially insist on doing this at the museum of natural history.

*********
On our way to the museum last Sunday Daya was very proud of an observation she made.

BC and AD.
Like dates.
I guess the present is express.
But we took the local train to the museum, which I suppose is also appropriate.

Daya is just a really cool person.  I love that she notices stuff like this.

Mad Velour

Carey unpacked some boxes and she had a pad of velour paper.
I have been wanting to try velour for ages so I made that our theme this week.

We are opening up our weekly theme to other sizes than ACEO.

So, velour.
I got a couple of large sheets. One black, one white.

I cut an 8x10 piece out of the black.

Since velour is supposed to be good for fur, I thought I would do a quick painting of Pebbles.
To be fair, she looks pissed off in the reference too.

This is an awful painting.
I kept saying to myself, "Do I really have to post this?"
"Yes."

Oh well.
Velour is a very interesting paper and I fought with it as you can plainly see.
It will take some getting used to. I like pastelmat better.
The painting is complete crap and that is ok. I make a lot of crappy paintings; usually I just don't post them. It's not a big deal.

I have to re-work this, so it is still taped up to the easel.

The First Five Years

I wrote recently about something I have been thinking about and trying to figure out for a while.

That "something"...whatever it is that people have which enables them to create and attract relationships, that "something" that makes other people want to be with you, connect with you- I don't think I have it.

And I have discovered that I'm correct about that, and I have figured out why.

******

When I went to the Mas Sajady event I did not feel good afterwards, like most of everyone else.
Actually, what happened over the next several days is memories from my toddler years and early childhood surfaced which I haven't thought about in decades.

Also I had the insight during the meditation that my father never bonded with me.  And that makes absolute perfect sense. I'm at peace with it, now, but it is what I expect from men in general.  Life has not proved me wrong. I wish it would.

I do have several distinct memories from when I was a toddler. Not a single one of them is good.

Anyhow, after doing some talking and reading, I have encountered the research on the first five years of life.

************
The first five years of life are known to be the most crucial years that shape a human's entire life in regard to how the brain develops and learns about environment and people, relationships, and how to connect and bond with others.

Somehow, I don't think that is very fair. But that's what the research shows.
If a child gets messed up in those years, it is very difficult to overcome it.

If that environment is hostile and unstable, as mine was, it patterns and alters the brain and how the child learns what is safe and what is not.  If other people (caregivers)- especially the mother- are not safe and no strong bonding with caregivers is established, it affects how the child is able to bond with other people through their entire life.  Again, this makes perfect sense.

My mother and I never bonded. After I was born, in addition to the emerging mental health problems she already had, she went into a severe post-partum depression and never came out of it.

She did bond with my sister who is 13 months older.  My sister was a very abnormally mellow baby who slept through the night permanently at 10 days old. From that experience my mother decided that babies were easy, like playing with dolls, and all the people who said babies were hard, a lot of work, etc were just wrong. (Her own words)

Then I came along and all my mother's problems began. I was a normal baby according to my father- (I asked him once if I was abnormally difficult- he said no) but to my mother I was a huge problem and a burden because I was not as abnormally easy as her first baby. Relatives told me she would often just ignore me, or let me cry instead of feeding me. Additionally, I was born with messed up eyes.  My right eye was crossed. My mother didn't like having a baby with an obvious physical defect.

She also taught this hostile attitude towards me to my sister, who openly admitted she always hated me growing up. And she had no problems acting like it, right up until the last time I saw her. It was a very bad dynamic.

My parents' marriage was already a bad situation and my father was on his way out. He officially left when I was around three years old. Everyone was always fighting and yelling. So I never actually bonded with anyone, and this has continued until this very day.  In my teenage/young adult years, if I had even just one strong positive connection to an adult, things might have been very, very different for me.

********
I spoke with my aunt a few weeks ago.  She is my mother's sister.  She is 12 years older than my mother. They are (were at one point?) close.  We don't talk a lot, but it was really nice to speak with her. She asked me if I would be open to speaking with my mother again.  I said no. She asked why, and I told her. My mother is so, so very sick. Deeply sick. I hope she gets help (she won't) but I can't be involved with her anymore.  It is too toxic.  Besides, why would I want to connect with someone who has openly admitted for decades that she doesn't even like me?  I don't need that and I sure as hell am not going to expose Daya to it. I got away. I broke the cycle. Daya is ok.

My aunt told me that she understands and agrees with me. She told me that I am right, because my mother not only isn't getting any better, she's getting much worse.  My aunt told me she supports and agrees with me, and that she is proud of me.  That means a lot to me because I know she knows the reality of the situation.

It is sad. But there isn't anything to do about it.
For my own stability and peace- and my daughter's- I have to stay completely out of contact forever.

********
So, where to from here?
It is a good thing to have clarity on these things, the why's.
Why I feel like something is missing from my foundation programming.
Why I just don't relate to so much of what other people experience.
Why, where most others have strong foundational bonds, I just have blankness. There is no other way to describe it. Where there should be connections, there is just...blankness.

***********
It is rather bleak because I don't think I ever really stood a chance in this life.
While I certainly have come a very, very long way- and I broke the cycle with my own child- who is completely removed from all of this- Daya does have a chance at a good life- I don't have any answers on where to from here for my own life.

I would be ok with my past- all of it- if I could somehow change the present. But it doesn't change, despite all my momentous efforts.

I truly don't know what else to do, that I have not already done or am not already doing.

*********
I've already had too many "worst case" scenarios.
I'm numb to it.
I want something else.
Something positive, something happy.

I just want a chance to try, with awareness.
That's all.

Microbes

There is a really fantastic exhibit at the Museum of Natural History, so we went yesterday.
It was a great time as always.
Daya has literally grown up in that museum.

Here are some cool things about microbes!

The Comfy Chair

Jackie and I went to Kohls the other day. I left Daya home at her request.  Said we'd be right back.
It was supposed to be a very fast trip.
But we stayed there for a very long time.
Daya got annoyed.

But we had a very good reason.

There were two chairs and we each had to try and enjoy every single setting on both of them.

The End of an Era

Well, Dr. Zizmor is retired!

If you have lived in NYC for a while, you will know who Dr. Zizmor is. He is locally famous.

Dr. Z is (was) a dermatologist based on the upper east side (60th or 61st I think) and he was the first doctor to advertise in the subway.  And on TV. Heavily.  For the last 25 years.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s, more often or not the subway car you were in was shouting out "Come See Dr. Z!"

For the holidays, his picture would be on the ads with his wife.

Even Daya has seen and commented on his ads on the train.

The Gothamist did an article on it with an interview.

Dr. Zizmor: There were none, there were no doctors ads. Why did I do it? In those days, dermatology was very exclusive, chic, chic. Most people, different ethnicity groups didn't even know there were dermatologists. I felt I wanted to open it up, treat people of all demographics and so on. And I really started doing that, from the very rich to the poor, black, white, whatever. So I was the only one on the subway for about 25 years.

You know what?  I have to salute the guy on that.  And apparently, despite the awful cheeziness of his ads, he is a good doctor.

Google does not have the really old ad of Dr Z with his wife.  But they both wish you happy holidays!

Dr. Zizmor's ads are so locally famous they spawned a parody ad.  I saw this one on the train with Daya last year. She laughed at it.  I laughed harder and explained it to her.  But still, it is a context thing.

*************
Goodbye Dr. Zizmor, this truly is the end to an era!

Mad ACEO: Pan Pastel

Our theme this week was pan pastels!
This was the theme last week before the last-minute change.

I LOVE pan pastels.
Here are all my trays except for 2, laid out for painting.

I painted a cave in 5 parts.

First, I colorfix primed 5 ACEO size bristol.  Then I taped them together and stuck them to my drawing board.  Here is my sketch in conte.

First layer in pan pastel.  I sprayed it with fixative.

The final layer is Rembrandts and pans.
I worked on all 5 as one painting, while taking care to make sure each mini-composition still worked.

Full Cave
2.5 x 17.5

And each section of the cave
2.5 x 3.5

We Need White Color Charts

My True lights set came with a make-your-own color chart!

I LOVE color charts.

Sooo pretty

Did you know there are mint KitKats??? I had no idea.
They are wonderful.

I am back to work today after being on vacation since December 23rd.
I will very much miss being on vacation, but at the same time, I'm glad the holidays are over.

Alane

I am so slow.
I am slower than a sleeping cat sometimes.
Not at actual painting...this was only 6-7 hours...but in getting to the painting, and things leading up to actually painting, I can be slow.

But I finally finished my portrait swap painting.

Here is Alane.
9x12
pastel on pastelmat (awesome paper)
and my sparkly black pan pastel

**********
Dru and Branwen stopped by yesterday which was nice.  Branwen and Daya always go off and do...Branwen-and-Daya-things.  Dru and I lounge and chat.  (I showed her my new pastels.)

Especially after not having done an actual serious real-deal painting (as opposed to those little ACEOs) for a while, I think that maybe I can't do it anymore. And sometimes when I get to the easel and I can't get my head in gear, or when things are just not working, I really think maybe I can't do it anymore. I told that to Dru, and she says the same thing happens to her. And Dru is a really accomplished artist so that's very encouraging to hear.

This portrait went through a terrible ugly stage that was so discouraging I had to put the highlights in earlier than I usually do.  Then I started feeling better about it. All paintings go through an ugly stage, This one was just worse than usual.

Finishing a painting is always a good feeling.

**********
Lisa asked about pastels since she has succumbed to my bad influence and will now turn into a pastel junkie.
I fully support and approve of this endeavor.

Lisa, I think a really good starter set would be a set of the Blick artist brand.  They are good pastels. You will like them. I like mine.  Work vertically and don't blow your pastel dust around. Unless you are outside. Get some pastel paper too.... Mi Tientes is a good quality non-sanded inexpensive paper. Some papers can be very expensive too.... but you will have different working results on different papers. Clear gesso is a good ground to coat your paper, if you want extra tooth. (I prefer a toothier surface)  I do a lot of my aceo cards in pastel on clear-gessoed Bristol, which is a very affordable, available, and good paper solution for pastels.

True Lights

There is a Terry Ludwig* pastel set I have been lusting after for about a year.

*Terry Ludwig makes absolutely superb handmade pastels!  If you want to look at lots of really pretty colors go to his site.  He's a friendly guy, too.

The set is definitely not a need.  It is a lust. But every few months or so, I would go to the Blick site and look at the pictures. It was (a little bit) on sale...and my aunt sent me $75.....now they are mine. They arrived two days ago.

I have been staring at them a lot.
I will even use them on the portrait I am currently finishing, my portrait swap, which has been staring at me for a month from the easel.

True guilt is when paintings stare at you- and glare at you- from the easel.

Here are the True Lights.
They are all different colors of the same value... value is how dark or light something is.

They are very subtle, but especially in pastel work where colors aren't mixed like oils or acrylic, these are very useful. And they are very soft, perfect for top layers.

Clean

For the first time in many years- I don't even know how many- I am home alone (well with Daya) on New Year's Eve.

We are starting clean, just the two of us.
And the cats.
And the rats.

I cleaned everything.  Even curtains and oven mitts. The floors. All sheets and linens. The cats are clean.  The rats are clean. All laundry is done and put away. Dishes, too. I even broke down and got a new king size down comforter, since the old one was so messed up (from the cats (Pebbles)) that there was just no way it could ever be washed again. It was patched up, taped together, and new holes just kept appearing.  Sometimes you have to know when to call it quits.

Now that Pebbles is medicated and all her...issues... are resolved, we'll try again.
I think it will be ok.

Yes Pebbles, take a good look at what you did.

I also re-did my house altar. It is clean and simple.
Some new things are on there. Some old things too.

*********
My tarot card for the new year comes from Tarot of the Water, which just arrived less than two weeks ago. It is the second deck in a global artist collaboration.  (I also have the first deck.)

Eight of Swords
This is a card about feeling trapped, isolated, and blinded. However, there is a way out, which can be seen by a change in perspective.

From this page
The Eight of Swords is often a sign that it is best not to make any important decisions at this point because your thinking has been limited and constrained by self-imposed boundaries. You are struggling to see a situation for what it is and have been lead to believe certain things that may or may not be true. There are choices available but first you must be within the right mindset to know which option to choose. This means releasing the bindings and the blindfold to see the situation from a different, less imposing angle. There may also be too many ideas running through your head, thus it is best to wait until you feel more secure and certain about a situation before making important decisions and taking action.

I think this is a very appropriate card.

********
And of course, Daya has a new song.  I guess it is probably good year-round.

We wish you a kitty-Daya
We wish you a fluffy Isis
We wish you a noisy Furball
And a lazy Pebbles!

2016 Intentions

Wow, I actually managed a blog post every single day this year!

*********
The new year is the start of a new cycle, a beginning. It is a beginning the world. for the most part, collectively agrees on. So there is a lot of collective new-start-another-chance energy.

It makes sense because of the winter solstice, the Birth of Light.
What will we do with that new light?

********
2015 was pretty awful though there were some nice bits, like visiting Cathy and Dru and Branwen and Carey. And my apartment is all nice and clean and organized permanently.
Maintaining it is no big deal. So that's good.

But losing three long-term best friends, one right after another, in one year, really stinks.
It is mind-numbing. I want to just leave it all behind.
This year has seen the 10-year mark on a few different things.
Next year will bring two more 10-year marks.

*******
So here are my 2016 intentions:
1. Drink a lot of tea
2. Paint some pictures

That's it.

**********
Daya and I went to New Jersey for Christmas. We stayed for 2 days.
This is significant because
1) I like to stay home and do absolutely nothing on Christmas and
2) it's New Jersey.

But Branwen is worth it.
There's something everyone should know about Branwen, and it is that she is amazing and fabulous.
I have to say this was a very, very nice holiday- better than I expected, and it is thanks in large part to her.  And Dru. I am very grateful.

I will do a post on Branwen's Beasties, but for now here is Lucky the Amazing, Gorgeous, and Super-charming kitty. And Dru's rat Aloysious, who is so awesome he wins the Umber award.

Goodbye, Squishalicious

The Toys R Us flagship store in Times Square is closing as of tomorrow. I remembered when it opened 16 years ago.  It is huge, with a ferris wheel, a giant Barbie castle, and... Squishalicious.

Squishalicious is the huge robotic dinosaur on the third floor.
I named him Squishalicious after Carey thought he should have a name.
Because he is so adorable and cuddly.

Squishalicious is probably the coolest thing about Times Square, and now he has to find another home.

Also, now I don't know where to get my pink grapefruit gummy bears.

Although the huge Toys R Us was mostly a tourist attraction, and every time I went in there I was disoriented by the sheer visual chaos, I will miss it.  It was convenient.

We also lost FAO Schwartz, although they are apparently re-opening somewhere else, but it isn't the same. No one can afford the cost of operating a physical store anymore.  They cannot compete with online retailers who have better prices and better selection.

The huge space will be broken up into smaller retail shops.

We love you forever Squishalicious

Mad ACEO: Snow

We had a mid-week theme change...theme is snow!

I got three done. All are 2.5 x 3.5" oil pastel on bristol.
The first two have a double coat of acrylic glitter glaze, which is really difficult to photograph.
Oh well.
