Musical theme was The Sound of Music.

I'm having an artist problem that was running in my emotional background, and yesterday at Cathy's it just surfaced in a big strong intense bubble that hit me sideways and left me feeling rotten.
I do not like feeling this way but I am needing to look at it.
Here it is:
Over the past couple of months I have gotten two separate unrelated invitations from people to come visit them, they say come and paint! And the invitation to visit also comes with an expectation to give them a painting.
I do truly believe they don't realize this is inappropriate.
I also need to state that it isn't Cathy.
She's very respectful in this regard, and she also buys original art.
Over our visit she wanted to ask me a question from my artist perspective about a question she wanted to ask an artist she bought some work from, and if I thought it her question would be ok. It was just a very respectful thing to do, even seeking an artist perspective.
But Cathy is like that; she is never trying to get something for nothing. While she isn't an artist herself, she is very respectful.
This is one of my favorite things about Cathy because she is so respectful, and most of the time people are not.
Why this is a problem for me:
1. If I am your friend and you invite me to visit you, I hope it is because you want to see me, not because you are trying to get something from me.
2. Do you expect other friends who visit you to essentially compensate you for the visit to the value of a few hundred dollars?
People who are not artists do not understand artists. You don't, don't even try, we really are wired differently, and that is ok.
But please have a little mindfulness about it.
It is not casual to me. While I am not a professional, meaning only that I do not earn my living income from painting, it is a vocation. Not a casual hobby. I cannot stop. I have to do it. It is 24/7 for me, I am always thinking about it even when I'm not painting.
I also think that through the years- the completely stupid amount of life hours and energy I have put into my art- my work is decently good. And it has value. It is part of me and carries strong energy. I know what goes into it. It's not a casual past-time and people do not understand this because it is casual to them.
I have also had some bad experiences with "friends" regarding my art, so perhaps it influences my sour feeling.
Sour 1: Years ago my dear friend commissioned a portrait of her daughter's dog for her daughter's birthday. I did that painting for a VERY low price, and she was happy to pay it. But our other friends gave me a lot of backlash that I charged her for it in the first place. They thought it was very wrong for me to take money for a commissioned oil painting because it was my friend.
Sour 2: One of those same friends asked me once what I do with all my paintings. I answered they are either hanging or in storage in my studio. She told me I should be giving them to my friends because they are just sitting around and I'm not doing anything with them.
Sour 3: I was once invited by a friend (not a close friend) to their parents' anniversary party (I am not a family friend) and along with the invitation came the request to paint their portrait. I said no, and they didn't even try to hide their disappointment. I know I was only invited to the event because they wanted a painting. (I declined the invitation as well.)

I went to Connecticut for two nights and left Daya home alone overnight for the first time.
She's old enough and mature enough and she was fine.
But it was her first alone-overnight, so I said to her "If your friend isn't available to chat and you feel lonely, go on my computer and see if Cas is online.
I thought I would get an eye roll and a response like "Mom I have my own friends."
Instead, Daya got way too excited and said "I'm going to play ESO!"
And she did.
She went on MY Discord account and logged in to MY Elder Scrolls Online account and was in voice chats gaming with MY friends on MY characters running events with MY guild Saturday and Sunday!
I have Discord on my phone too so I could see her on there. (Which she knows.)

Cathy has foster kittens.
They are ridiculous.
I made a painting in the woods.
This is a painting I am extremely happy with and the whole time and space of it was very special.

I don't sell a lot of paintings.
It's something I put exactly zero effort into.
A lot of people ask me about it, usually if I do sell, and when I say "sometimes" they seem to categorize me as.... less. Like it makes me less of an artist.
I think it makes me more of an artist that I have never stopped painting through raising a kid by myself and working full-time AND coordinating years of dance logistics.
It isn't a hobby, it is a vocation and that's very different.
If you can stop, it's a hobby. If you can't stop no matter what, it's a vocation.

Occasionally I'll post a painting and someone will want to buy it, which happened with my beach plein air from earlier this month.
I have given exactly four (4) plein airs away as gifts, and never sold any, but I was really glad someone loved it that much to buy it!
Since I don't sell a lot, and most of my paintings are not made intending to be sold, it's a little bit sad when they go. I STILL miss my Auridon painting that I put in the dance raffle a few years ago.
I never feel this way about commissions or paintings that were made as gifts. I have no problem sending them off.
Anyhow, I shipped this painting out today and it is going to a good loving home and it has other painting friends.

We found out about Ailey's Junior Division this year from a friend.
They did not take ANY new students, only invited back 100 kids in levels 4-7, only half of those were invited for in-person three hours on Saturdays.
They have also let half their staff go which is super sad and i hope it is temporary.
I did make the final call on MYB for Daya, she wanted to give Ailey a chance and I'm so glad we did not.
It has worked out for her in a way t hat I don't think would have happened without divine intervention.
I had two simultaneous meetings tonight.
One was planned in advance, the other was last-minute.
One was weekly drawing, one was a back to school meeting.
Guess which one was planned and which one was not?
Our planned-in-advance drawing theme was Moulin Rouge, which I don't think I have ever seen.
And I couldn't listen to it either because of what might have been the most ridiculous school meeting I have ever attended.
My drawing was generally crap, despite feeling pretty good in general I do seem to have forgotten how to paint and draw. Carey said she forgot too, but maybe we can both relearn.
This is the one-hour pose, my focus was very split.
Charcoal and a pastel pencil and a General's white charcoal pencil.
My Amazing Feat of Self-Restraint:
So, during this covid period there was a time-stretch where people could not get haircuts.
Remember? Here in NYC it was about 5 months. I understand this was a problem for most people, I know the situation, I was in it too, but in August salons etc re-opened and everyone attended to their personal grooming.
Except .... one of the prominent staff people at school... (and I am NOT tagging this post LaG even though I really want to) .... has not returned to that important regular schedule of hirsute maintenance, and as a result he has turned into a yeti.
I'm not kidding.
I DO have a picture that I DESPERATELY want to post but I do know that would be very wrong and unkind, so I won't do it.
But in the interest of showing an accurate visual, here is a sample representation:
Oh, wait, something is missing....
Daya has been awarded a 50% scholarship to the year-round Manhattan Youth Ballet program!
Which means I can afford the tuition!
Some of her teachers are quite famous (in the dance world)!
One of them is one of her favorite teachers at Ailey!
She starts on Monday.
She will train 4 days in-studio and 2 days remote.
She will also perform.
This is in addition to LaGuardia.
It's not Ailey, but maybe this is better right now. In any case, she's in a good reputable pre-professional program and I think it will be an excellent experience.
